# CleanShot X for Windows Doesn't Exist. Here Is What Does.

CleanShot X is Mac-only and staying that way. An honest audit of what replaces it on Windows and mixed fleets: one-time pricing, a compositor, OCR on Mac, redaction, and an MCP server for agents.

Two rows in our own comparison table read No. Scrolling capture and video recording sit on the CleanShot side, and nothing below this line moves them.

Full disclosure, since the table is ours: we build Heretic Lazy Shot, one of the alternatives in it. The concessions come first anyway.

## The search everyone makes

We open the search data. The query is ten years old: cleanshot x for windows. The same forum threads scroll past, the same one-line answers, the same follow-ups from people hoping the answer changed. We close the tab. The answer did not change.

Three kinds of people typed that query. The switcher moved from a MacBook to a Windows machine and found the favorite tool didn't come along. The mixed-fleet person runs Mac at home and Windows at work, or the reverse, and maintains two screenshot muscle memories. The team lead wants one tool across a company that runs both operating systems and would rather buy once.

CleanShot answered all three with the same polite shrug. Mac only, now and always.

A tool that won't cross between machines isn't a workflow. It's a habit.

## Why CleanShot stays Mac-only

CleanShot leans hard on macOS: native frameworks, native look, deep system integration. That focus bought the smoothest capture experience on the Mac. Polished annotation, scrolling capture, screen recording with GIF export, a tidy cloud for instant sharing. Porting it to Windows means rebuilding most of it, and the developers have, sensibly, never tried. Not out of stubbornness. A port is a rewrite.

The phrase "proudly Mac-native" does two jobs at once. The pride does the selling. The native part does the limiting. And the limit is real: Mac-only isn't focus. It's a fence.

For a fleet of one Mac, none of this matters. CleanShot is an excellent choice and the rest of this page has nothing to add. The problem was never quality. The problem is the phrase one Mac.

A comparison page that hides its own No rows isn't a comparison. It's a brochure. The rows stay.

Three concessions, stated plainly. CleanShot does scrolling capture and video/GIF recording, and Lazy Shot does neither. Its Mac-native polish is real. If those three lines describe the daily work, buy CleanShot and stop reading. The rest of this page won't change the answer.

## What fills the hole

**Both platforms, one tool, one license.** The Windows machine at the office, the MacBook at home, the mixed team. One workflow everywhere, bought once. No per-seat subscription arithmetic, no "the Windows people use something else."

**A library that remembers.** Every capture lands in a searchable local library. Short keywords like `login-bug` or `q3-pricing` make the important ones findable months later. Soft delete means cleanup never destroys evidence.

**A compositor with a corrected spec sheet.** 19 canvas presets: 10 social formats, 6 aspect ratios, plus auto, original, and custom. Multi-stop gradients run 2 to 5 stops, and each preset remembers its own settings, so the X look and the docs look sit one click apart. The background catalog holds 46 images. An earlier draft of this page claimed 100+. Marketing arithmetic rounds up. The audit corrects it.

**Redaction that means it.** Light blur and light pixelation can sometimes be reversed; Depix-style attacks exist and they work. Spoiler is heavy mosaic redaction, the Telegram kind, for tokens and customer data. The question "can this come back?" deserves a heavier answer than blur.

**Annotation, compared honestly.** CleanShot's annotation is superb and we won't pretend otherwise. Lazy Shot covers the same daily ground, arrows, shapes, text, counters, with one structural difference: markers are a metadata layer, not baked pixels. Renumber, relabel, or move step badges after placing them. Save a layout as a preset and reapply it to next month's recaptured screens. For bug repros and docs that repeat the same shape every week, the difference compounds.

**The mixed-fleet math.** The comparison isn't €29.99 against $29. For a five-person team on mixed hardware, the real line is one flat purchase against per-Mac licenses plus a per-seat cloud subscription plus a second tool for the Windows half, with two sets of docs and two support surfaces. And a $29 one-time price with an $8 monthly cloud bill isn't a one-time purchase. It's a down payment.

Screenshotting is daily work, and daily tools are the wrong things to rent. Nobody who owns a toolbox rents a hammer.

**The part with no Mac-world equivalent: agents.** Lazy Shot ships a 23-tool MCP server. Claude, Cursor, or n8n can capture windows, name screenshots, place markers, and search the library, headlessly, on both platforms. CleanShot doesn't have to care about that. We do. ## The free options

An honest comparison mentions them, so. **ShareX** (Windows, free, open source) is genuinely powerful: endless capture modes and upload workflows, scrolling capture included, behind a UI only its mother could love. **Greenshot** (Windows, free) is lighter and older; the Mac port sits abandoned. **Shottr** (Mac, free or cheap) is a beloved lightweight CleanShot stand-in for basic needs. For "capture and annotate occasionally, spend nothing," start there. No sarcasm attached.

The paid tier earns its money around the capture, not at it: the compositor pipeline, the keyword library, redaction that holds, one identical tool on both platforms, an agent layer none of the free tools have. Occasional screenshotters don't need any of that. People who live in screenshots do.

## Who should still buy CleanShot

Being the alternative doesn't require pretending. CleanShot is the right call when:

- the fleet is one Mac, now and for the foreseeable future;
- scrolling capture or screen recording is daily work;
- the cloud-share-link flow, subscription and all, matches how the team shares.

Lazy Shot is the right call for Windows or both platforms, a one-time price, local-first storage with redaction that holds, the compositor, or agents that need eyes.

## Migration notes

Switching costs are low. Screenshots are just files.

1. Point the save directory wherever the old captures live and set a filename pattern (`{date}`, `{time}`, app tokens) to match the old convention.
2. Rebind the muscle-memory hotkeys in Settings: region, window, display, plus per-monitor bindings on multi-display setups.
3. Choose the default post-capture behavior: copy to clipboard, save to disk, or open in the editor.
4. Build one Compositor preset, background, padding, shadow, and let per-preset memory replace setting up the look every time.
5. On a Mac, run both for a week. Nothing about Lazy Shot demands monogamy.

## FAQ

**Is there really no way to run CleanShot X on Windows?**
No. No Windows build exists, and no emulation path is worth the time.

**Can I use Lazy Shot on both my Mac and my Windows machine?**
Yes. That is the whole thesis. Same app, same shortcuts, same library layout on both. The €14.99 license covers one device; the €29.99 pack covers three, and it does not care which of them runs Windows.

**Do I lose OCR by leaving CleanShot?**
On a Mac, no. Lazy Shot runs local Tesseract OCR, fully on-device: select a region, get text on the clipboard, nothing sent anywhere. On Windows, yes, for now. OCR is Phase 1 and ships on macOS only.

**Is Lazy Shot a subscription?**
